WHAT IS LENT?

 

The season of Lent in our congregation is a very special time for God’s People.  As we prepare to celebrate Easter and the Resurrection we need to first be reminded of the great cost of God’s gift of life and sacrifice for our sins.  This great cost is the suffering and death of His only Son, our Lord Jesus on the cross.

 

In keeping with the ancient tradition of the Church we observe 40 days before Easter (excluding the Sundays) as a somber reflection of Christ’s suffering and death for our sakes.  In our congregation we begin this Season of Lent with Ash Wednesday, February 22, 2012, and the start of our mid-week vespers at 6:30 p.m.

 

Ash Wednesday begins this penitential season with the imposition of ashes.  We mark the foreheads of those who come forward to the altar with ashes,  with the words “The mark of sin, the mark of Christ.”  This mark is to be worn for the rest of the evening and not removed until early morning.  It symbolizes our sinfulness and the reason Christ had to die on the cross for us.

 

Please join us each Wednesday evening for Vespers at 6:30 p.m.   Next week we begin with a soup supper at 5:00-6:00 p.m., followed by our worship service.

This Wednesday is the first Wednesday night Lenten Service. It is Ash Wednesday. Please join us for worship at 6:30 pm.  The Young Musicians will play at this service. Preceding the service we will have our traditional hotcross buns at 5:30 pm.  Please join us.
